Despite their renowned alchemist lineage and grueling childhood training, both have fallen into a life of laziness following the mysterious disappearance of their parents. Their carefree days soon come to a sudden end, however, when they find themselves saddled with crippling debt under an existing agreement with the shipowner Countess Remilia. Desperate to escape their dire situation, they attempt a daring overnight flight, only to be captured by a military ship. Now branded as slaves using accursed ”emblem magic,” they are thrust into the unforgiving world of Fahran, a stratified city rife with intrigue and danger. Here, they must endure harsh labor and navigate its treacherous tiers to reclaim their freedom. Will these wayward sisters rise to the challenge, or will the city claim them as its own? CHARACTERS Liz Lachester The older twin, full of cheer and boundless energy. Though she lacks interest in alchemy, her physical prowess and adventurous spirit make her a force to be reckoned with. Rose Lachester The younger twin, serene and unhurried. She prefers idleness over ambition, yet her mastery of magic and puppeteering makes her a subtle but formidable player in their quest.
